Osman Hamdi Bey

Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) was an accomplished archaeologist and the founder of the Imperial Museum (now the Istanbul Archaeological Museums). In his role as its director, he was responsible for granting permissions to foreign excavations in Ottoman territories.  He was also a pioneering Turkish painter, who had studied in Paris with Boulanger and Gerôme.
